Group Raising Bikeway Funds
In the wake of Mayor Bill Bunten’s veto of a $15,000 city expenditure to develop a bikeway master plan for Topeka, a local group is seeking to raise that money through donations — $5 at a time.
The Complete Streets initiative of the Heartland Healthy Neighborhoods coalition recently announced it was kicking off “$5 to Override,” a grassroots campaign to raise $15,000 to give to the city to cover its costs to hire a planning consultant to develop a bikeway master plan for Topeka.

Visioneers Quietly Working
In March 2008, the Heartland Visioning process kicked off to cheers from an overflow crowd of more than 650 people hungry for progress.
Nearly a year and a half later, the cheers have died down. But visioning participant Nancy Johnson said the process is quietly but steadily moving forward.

City Services Promote Health
Beth Gartner of the Capitol Journal wrote: "One new coalition, Heartland Healthy Neighborhoods, brings together city and county agencies, private physicians, nonprofit groups, politicians, hospitals, banks and individuals with a mission to 'promote neighborhood well-being by mobilizing people, ideas and resources. HHN received a grant from Pioneering Healthy Communities which was given to only 18 communities across the nation to adopt policy changes and initiate programs that actively work toward making Topeka the 'Healthiest Capital City in America.'"
